Hiking Guide to Mount Mulanje

The new Hiking Guide to Mount Mulanje aims to help more hikers enjoy the majesty of the mountain. It presents a fresh format for exploring Mulanje, with routes described form base to summit with an itinerary for each step of the way, and points of interest such as waterfalls, pools, forests and villages highlighted. It is intended for use in conjunction with a local guide with intimate knowledge of the paths and conditions.

It comprises of 18 hiking routes on the mountain. There are short walk to waterfalls and scenic spots, and long day walks to the plateau level. There are classic routes and peaks such as Sapitwa and Chambe, challenging routes such as the Crater and Scorpion Path, and a new epic - The Grand Traverse from Mulanje Boma to Phalombe. The many alternative peaks and routes that can be done with a deviation from the main itineraries are also suggested. A table of hikes with distance and height gain data, and difficulty level allows for easy comparison to help select a route (see table below).

The printed guidebook is available for purchase at specialist bookstores in Malawi and the MCM committee. Download a PDF version of Hiking Guide to Mount Mulanje. This production was published in January 2017 by the Mountain Club of Malawi and sponsored by the Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust.

The routes are hosted on ViewRanger - a free website and mobile app that provides additional functionality whilst viewing online or on the mountain. This platform allows individuals to share comments, add a rating, and upload photos for a route - a great place to contribute you own insights or updates to improve the guide.

Each of the routes has also been created on Google earth - a free software with an interactive 3D satellite image. The 3D image of Mount Mulanje with superimposed routes is a fantastic way to explore the mountain virtually. Download Google earth, then access the route files in the MCM Dropbox folder.
